Mogano, David
David Mogano was born in Pietersburg in 1932. He passed away in 2000. Mogano was educated at Mogano Higher Primary School in Pietersburg. He arrived in Johannesburg in about 1950 and worked as a cook in a hotel. His formal art education was under two great South African artists - Cecil Skotnes and Sydney Kumalo, in 1959, at the famous Polly Street art center. His subjects range from detailed township scenes through landscapes and to various aspects of rural African life and customs. As a former student of Cecil Skotnes and Sydney Kumalo - Mogano is best known for his detailed, quasi-naturalistic narratives of ‘township’ life as well as his more mannered explorations of ancestral Africa. Both these aspects of Mogano’s work make a good use of the artist’s imagination. He exhibited for a number of years with Artists Under the Sun in Joubert Park in Johannesburg. His art was also on display in the Peter Sibeko Art Gallery in Johannesburg, in the late 1980’s. Much of his work features in collections based overseas, in Paris and California. Amongst the collections that host his works are the Africana Museum, Johannesburg; Coca Cola Company, Mexico; ISM Pelmama Permanent Collection; Putco, Siemens House, Johannesburg; De Beers Centenary Art Gallery and the University of Fort Hare.
