Jim Cooper, a 96-year-old mariner and maritime artist, was hosting his last water colour exhibition outside Art on Main at the Moffett on Main Lifestyle Centre in Port Elizabeth in March 2018. Cooper has made a huge contribution to the art world in the Eastern Cape and was one of the first artists to start Art in the Park, where he showcased his works for many years.Cooper, who was born in 1921 in England, found his passion for painting naval ships and old sailing ships when he was called up for active duty as a Royal Marine at the age of 18 and fought against the Germans in the Second World War. He was awarded eight medals for personal courage and bravery shown on the notorious Arctic Convoy Route during the war. Cooper immigrated with his family to South Africa in 1964. A past ECWA member, Jim Cooper, painted the most stunning battle ships, a lot of them from memory. Although Jim is no longer with us, his work is still available to purchase.
